Fishing Grounds and Resorts

Indian Ocean Fishing - Mozambique Islands

Mozambique stretches for 3 000 km along the East coast of Africa, between South Africa and Tanzania. Mozambique is Africa’s premier sport fishing and black marlin destination from October to March, being the ONLY Indian Ocean waters to have produced grander–plus Black Marlin up to 635 kg (1 400 pounds), though, the official record is 1 109 kg (503 pounds).

All the tropical species, including world record queenfish (five–finger jack), springer (ladyfish) and giant trevally, are present. The summer months from October to March are the main marlin season, with January and February being the best. Sailfish are present during these months but they also appear off Bazaruto and Benguerra Islands in large numbers in July and August. Most general pelagic species are present year round. These include kingfish, giant trevally, queen mackerel and queenfish. Surfcasting and fly fishing is consistently productive for most species such as giant trevally, Ladyfish, bonefish, queenfish, pompano and barracuda as well as skates, rays and sharks (mostly blackfin) are caught regularly.

Bazaruto Archipelago Fishing Grounds

Bazaruto Archipelago & Indigo Bay Island Resort & Spa

The Bazaruto Archipelago has been considered one of East Africa’s best, and certainly Mozambique’s, premier fishing destinations since the late 50’s, when pioneer anglers fishing from Santa Carolina (Paradise) Island discovered a very healthy population of giant black marlin in a sea which teemed with other, then called ‘lesser game fish’.

The archipelago is still the only place in Africa to have produced black marlin in excess of a 1000 pounds and the current all–tackle African record for the species, was actually caught off the northern tip of Bazaruto Island in November 1998 – an incredible fish of 1298 pounds. Recently, anglers from around the world have discovered that the archipelago’s fisheries hold much more than the giant black marlin, which migrates through its waters in the summer months.

They have discovered an amazing winter run of sailfish, a great variety of offshore species such as big wahoo, dorado, king mackerel, giant trevally and tuna, to name a few, as well as a great diversity of inshore species on the leeward of the islands, making it an ideal destination for light tackle and fly fisherman. With this potential at its doorstep, Indigo Bay has a top quality big game sport fishing operation for you to enjoy.

Quirimbas Archipelago & Pemba Beach Hotel

Quirimbas Archipelago & Pemba Beach Hotel & Spa

Pemba and the Quirimbas Archipelago have for years been unexplored fishing grounds. Pioneering anglers have long known of its treasures and potential. It is only recently that recreational anglers are following in the path of the intrepid fishermen of the past. Most of what was known about fishing in the area was limited to local anglers’ knowledge and it is only now that this unspoiled region is being explored.

In the old days, the experiences and reports of a handful of charter boats, which left their homeports of Durban, Richards Bay and Port Elizabeth in South Africa to fish these rich waters, returned with glowing accounts of a huge variety of fish species. With such great potential and so much game fish in the area, Rani Resorts has established world–class catch–and–release game fishing operations at all our destinations.
